Route History Museum, located in Springfield, Illinois, sits along the historic Route 66 and tells the powerful story of Black resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurship in America’s heartland. Through immersive exhibits and interactive virtual reality experiences, Route History shines a light on the untold stories of the travelers, business owners, and families who built safe havens along “The Negro Motorist Green Book” travel routes during the Jim Crow era.
Visitors are invited to journey through history and experience how the struggles and triumphs of the past continue to shape our path forward today.
To preserve and share the inspiring stories of Black travelers, entrepreneurs, and communities along Route 66 and beyond—using history, technology, and storytelling to educate, empower, and inspire future generations.
